Red Dirt Rampage Part 2

This morning gave way to another glorious day in Oklahoma and a sensational start to the final 5 stages of the 2017 SASS SW Regional Championship.

We started early in the Saloon (stage 5), headed off to Church (stage 1), hit the Stagecoach running out of town (stage 2), jumped off at the Adobe Wall (stage 3) and finally arrived to the end of the match at the Train Depot (stage 4).

 

We had a great Posse headed by Wild Horse John, along with Capt Jim Midnight, Shootin Fox, Creek, Mesquite Ranger, Max Montana, Cooncan, Bertie Winchester, Rio Concho Kid, Alamo Andy, Wildcat Cliff, Texas Mean Gene, Sixkiller – US Marshal, Wes Beckett U.S. Marshal, Jackaroo and Kathouse Kelli.

 

All done and dusted a clean match for me along with a few others from our posse. Jack had continuing shotgun issues but hung in there.

 

We visited with friends and picked up supplies, heading out to get ready for the banquet and awards.

This year's banquet was held at the University of Central Oklahoma and was an excellent venue. Awards were done, prizes were given – I've never seen Grady County Kid leap so high or so fast when he won the Dillon 650. Sweetest young man you could meet.

I finished 1st in Lady Wrangler with Tejas Red 2nd, Calamity Di-Bar 3rd (not in the photo) and Cheeka Bow Wow 4th.

 

Congratulations to Jack's fellow Silver Senior's, Aberdeen 1st, Lefty Wheeler 2nd, Creek 3rd and my sincerest apologies for not remembering the other 2.

It was an extremely close 1.17sec's but congratulations to Missouri Mae for the overall ladies and to Creek County Kid for the overall men's and 1st overall!

 

Another great match, again, if you have been thinking of shooting this match?well, get here next April when the Regional will be combined with Land Run and the banquet back at the National Cowboy Museum and Hall Of Fame.

Hellfire 2017

Louisiana's usual subtropical climate had carried later into the year what with the influence of Harvey, Irma and the rest of the hurricane weather occurring in the Gulf. The humidity was extremely high with temps in the 90's for this year's Hellfire match.

The Jackson Hole Regulators are located just outside of Quitman, LA.

These group of cowboy's have a sensational range setup with a full 10 bays, facades, fans and boardwalks on all except one. There is a covered pavilion to accomodate 150 odd cowboy's and cowgirl's for meals and awards which we were all quite thankful for in the brief storm shower on Saturday evening.

 

The air conditioned office was welcoming! It also held the poker game night on Saturday won by Lodan B Fast!

Oh! And on the corner as you entered the range each state that was represented, a flag was in place AND included the Australian flag! Thanks guys!

 

Friday was side match day including speed events and 3 stage's of Wild Bunch.

Wild Bunch went pretty well, remembering all the things I had focused on for the last day of EOT – yes, have not shot it since then! So I was pleased with the outcome!

This year there were 143 shooters, of which 19 had a clean match! Congratulations to you and all who placed in their categories.

Jack and I were on a great posse with Two Gun Johnnie as our Posse Leader. We had a great time with Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Gentilly Gent, Mountain Laurel, Stump Jumper, Duke City Deadeye, Dixie Deadeye, Mt Zion Gypsy, Mt Zion Yellowboy, Texas Mac, Texas Flower, Sidewinder Sid, Texas Jack Star and Tennessee Star.

The match had a great mix of sequences, targets were various shapes, we had knockdowns for pistol and rifle, some were close, some were far and made for a controlled style of match. It was really, really good!

 

As we rounded out the weekend with 5 stages each day, Jack and I had a miss a piece, with Jack's shotgun giving him fits! So was not his best by far. 😦 Poor man.

Congratulations to my fellow Lady Wrangler's, 2nd place Cheeka Bow Wow and 3rd place Complicated Lady.

 

Trophies this year were a shooting bag of varying size with Hellfire printed on the side. Mine has already been put to good use for travelling sewing equipment, laptop etc! Thanks to Smokey Shane for the side match and Wild Bunch trophies, laser cut steel. He also made a fire pit that was raffled off along with a number of guns, congratulations to all the raffle winners!

 

I had a great finish to a great weekend and was pleased to receive a gorgeous buckle for overall ladies.

Thank you again to Jackson Hole Regulators for a great match, great food, fantastic hospitality, oh and a particularly good style of Gumbo on Friday night!

Ruckus In The Nation’s

The SASS Oklahoma State Championship was held this past same weekend as Gunsmoke and as you know, Jack and I were able to pre shoot the previous weekend.

Happy to say that Jack won 2nd Place and OK State Champion in Silver Senior. I won 1st Place and OK State Champion in Lady Wrangler.

Congratulations to all the Cowboys and Cowgirls who attended and placed in their respective categories! In particular to C S Brady for winning 1st overall, Creek County Kid for overall OK State Champion and to Missouri Mae for winning Cowgirl and overall ladies and OK State Champion!

Gunsmoke 2017

We made Faribault, MI on Tuesday evening and settled in for the next 4 days of shooting the SASS Mid West Regional – Gunsmoke.

Morristown is just a stones throw away and home to Ahllman's gun store and range facilities.

The Cedar Valley Vigilantes have an awesome range setup with permanent facades for every stage and a banquet hall accommodating around 500 people.

Wednesday we sat in on Lassiter's seminars on stage writing and gunsmithing. Whilst some of it was a confirmation of how we knew things were done, I certainly got a lot of other good information from these.

The 'Buffalo Hunt' side match was on so we both had a go at that which was interesting without the larger calibre rifle but good fun regardless and although we didn't shoot Wild Bunch this time, it looked like they had a great turn out for that.

Thursday was side match day. We did side matches in the morning and warm up in the afternoon which is always good for getting back to match pace and sorting out any issues……like bent levers etc.

Friday was main match day! Bring it on! All the ladies attending had their photo taken for LOCAS (Ladies of Cowboy Action Shooting) then it was on to safety briefing and getting stuck in to the first 6 stages.

 

A few of the sequences were strange to say the least, really made you think, they didn't particularly flow and surprised there weren't more procedurals than what we had – speaking for our posse alone. It would be interesting to interpret the match data afterwards.

As I mentioned earlier, the range looks fantastic, the targets were great and not oversized with a good mix of shapes that still made you aim even though they were close. There was plenty of movement and run down scenarios. There was enough allowance for staging, re-staging, start positions, choice etc. Some weren't particularly happy or that it was not like previous years of Gunsmoke but Jack and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would come back again.

Saturday we finished out the match with the final 6 stages to a clean match for me and a dang 'and 1' for Jack!

We had an awesome Posse led by our Posse Marshal's – Medicine Creek Johnny and Jailmaker, rounded out with Shameless Hussie, Belle Vaquera, Billy Broncstomper, Wild Horse John, Trigger Happy Ted, Misty Rider, Wicker Nash, Parson Pete, Seneca Kid, Tame Bill, The Brisco Kid, Kiamichi Queen, Marshal Fire, Bloodhoof John, Cardiac Kate, the ever entertaining Owl Eyed Olga, and O.E. His lovely wife (and I apologise for not remembering her name) and Jailmakers wife Heidi were our resident scorers for the match.

 

We had great weather all weekend. The Friday night and Saturday night dinners were great and the awards presentation Saturday, with its PowerPoint presentation was well organised! No missing hearing names for categories when you can see it up on the screen!

Congratulations to all shooters who won and placed in their categories!

Jack placed 3rd in his category. Congratulations Silver Senior 1st Place and Mid West Regional Champion Don Jorge, 2nd Riverview Rattler, 4th Creek, 5th Faygo Kid, 6th Half Fast Len, 7th Jack Pine Jerry, 8th Free Bird and 9th Buck Skunk.

 

I finished 1st in Lady Wrangler with a big congratulations to Belle Vaquera in 2nd Place and the Mid West Regional Champion!! LeAnnie Oakley 3rd, Daisy Ann 4th, Bucksanna 5th

 

Your 2017 SASS Mid West Regional champions went to Billy The Avenger and Pious Player! Congratulations!

The Men's and Ladies Overall Winners this year for Gunsmoke 2017 were Billy The Avenger and myself, Kathouse Kelli! Thank you to Logos Leather for the fabulous stools and water jug!

One Hell Of A Weekend!

What a great weekend Jack and I have had! We took off Friday after lunch down to Leonard, TX ready for a weekend of shooting.

We got shooting and then some this weekend!

Saturday we headed to the range where the Texas Ten Horns hold their club matches and then some. Shooters numbered around 44 or so for 6 great stages.

 

With a serving of hotdogs thrown down and the match scores dealt with, those who were willing and able, through the heat, had a crack at the 'Super Stage'! What a hoot!

 

Essentially 2 stages joined together, use another set of pistols and another rifle – so all in all, 4 pistols, 2 rifles, 1 shotgun, ammo count 48 rounds.

Here's the scores from that day, Jack in 9th place overall with me in 5th!

 

Rest up, 'cause we're doing it all again Sunday! Well all but the super stage.

 

It's another warm one, although we did have a little cloud cover today making it slightly more pleasant for a bit, we ran the same 6 stages again.

 

Let's just say Sunday Jack and I switched places – I finished 9th and he was 5th overall. He had a good day and some days, well, we're only human! Lol!

 

Off to Mexican for a very entertaining lunch! You meet some very interesting and/or funny people doing this sport. Let's just say I thoroughly enjoyed it and have spent most of the time laughing.

 

This morning we packed up and headed back across the border to Albany, OK. What great facilities and hospitality! 32 shooters came out to play on what is the hottest day for the weekend.

 

Two posse's got to it and soon we had got through 6 stages and were heading to the arena and upstairs dining area for a spectacular feed! Pasta, bread, cookies, brownies, cobbler and ice cream – all home made by the lovely Calamity Dibar (I'm sure Iron Tomahawk Kid helped too 😉 ) he certainly made sure we were all fed and watered.

 

Jack and I had switched places again. I finished 5th and he in 8th overall.

 

Thanks so much to the Texas Ten Horns and the Red River Valley Cowpokes for a great match weekend. We will be back!

THE Day of Truth

'Days of Truth 2017' has come to an end with a long day of 9 stages yesterday to complete the match.

We enjoyed the match with great stages, targets and distance, good mix of movement as well. Colbert and the AWS team put on a great match.

Last night we changed and headed back to the range for the dinner, awards and costume contest.

Speaking of the latter, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people really dressing up and while standing there waiting for my turn, listened to them talk about their costumes and how the military guys were very well informed.

Best Dressed Man, Lady, Couple, Military and Junior cogratulations to all contestants and winners.

And I didn't get a photo of the couples or juniors! Congratulations though to Cherry Poppins & Captain Woodbury Kane 1st, Harry Long & Crazy Lady 2nd, Jarka & Mgrda Kredoíboví 3rd in the couples. For the juniors, Little Sure Shot 1st, Black River Belle 2nd and little brother and sister Jan & Ludmila 3rd.

The Ladies Of Cowboy Action Shooting, Cowgirl of Honor Award was also presented and it was with congratulations to Crazy Lady from Cžech Republic 3rd Place, Jessie Belle from Germany 2nd Place and Wonder Bibi from Italy in 1st Place.

 

It was well after midnight when we got back I know.

The results, as I'm sure you want to know, so the 10 in the rifle and the shotgun mishaps cost me dearly but am pleased to say 5th lady overall and still managed 2nd behind the lovely Mad Cat With Gun finishing first for the Lady Wranglers! Congratulations to my other Lady Wrangler competitors, Misty Moonshine 3rd, Black Velvet 4th and Katie Scarlett O'Hara 5th.

 

Jackaroo finished very well overall at 19th and 2nd in Silver Senior category. Congratulations to the other Silver Senior's, Captain Wildbeard finishing 1st, Lash LaRue 3rd and Ace Heart 4th.

 

This year's SASS European Championship, Days of Truth, overall Man and Lady – Hell Hound and Mad Cat With Gun! Congratulations to you both.

 

This morning we got sort of a sleep in, packed everything and headed out for Prague via Kutná Hora. Well…….that was the plan…..we made it as far as Kutná Hora and checked into a Hotel. The boss has had a sleep and we feel kinda normal again – if there is such a thing for us.

Time to head out into the street for dinner and have a quick look around.

End Of Trail 2017 Cowboy Action World Championships

The 'town' has filled with more cowboy's and cowgirl's from all around the world, ready to test their skills and compete for their World Championship ranking.

This year there were 17 from Australia, 7 from New Zealand, at least 2 from the Netherlands and Canada, and a few from Germany. My apologies if there were more from other countries.

The match this year 'A Tribute to Clint Eastwood' westerns. The NRA Firearms Museum had a fabulous display of all guns used by Clint Eastwood in films or by others in films he had directed. Such a neat display! EMF Firearms also had some excellent firearms and a beautiful piece fully engraved and gold plated from The Museum of Confederacy Spirit – an edition of 500.


Thursday was a great start to the main match, starting on the late wave with Posse 29. On our posse led by Shamrock Sadie, we had Knot Hardly Dunn, Christian Mortician, Trail Bandit, Randy Saint Eagle, Papa Dave, Reno Mustang, Dodge City Dixie, Wild Horse John, Trigger Happy Ted, Misty Rider, Avery Wade, Tombstone John, Red Johnson, Pancho Sin Lefty, Lucky Boy, Jackaroo and of course me, Kathouse Kelli.


Most of the week but particularly Thursday and Friday were hot! Think the statistics for this year's match was 1800 gallons of water (?) and this one I do remember 97 gallons of Gatorade. A personal thanks to Dusty Garnet and EZ-GZ for your medical aid and driving up and down the range keeping everyone hydrated, to the rest of the waddies for keeping the water containers constantly topped up. Even though we always have some with us, it's never enough and we so appreciate it.


Side match awards were held on Friday night in the main tent and I must say again thanks to Santa Fe Brewing Company for sponsoring SASS, the bar was frequented often. Congratulations to all side match winners. I picked up one for the .22 pistol – thanks Dixie Bell for allowing me to use yours!


It was a great mix of side match winners this year!

Saturday we had the early shift. With an overcast sky and much cooler temperatures it made for a pleasant start of the final shooting day. All wrapped up! What's done, is done now and Sunday would see what the outcome would be.

Saturday evening for the banquet and best dressed costume contests started well. There were some sensational entries this year with myself, Texas Flower, Shotglass and Dixie Bell placing in the Best Dressed Ladies. Jack had entered his first costume contest ever as Thomas Durant (Hell On Wheels, S4, Ep1) but I should have had him in the Silver Screen category. 😦 Never mind, he did a great job, we just need to get the right hat sorted for him and he will enter again. Got Artie from Major Photography to work his magic and subsequently he has this amazing photo now.

 

After the costume contests were done and the band was on, it was a quick change up and Mary-Lou July made her first solo appearance at EOT. She said she'd been to the Doily Gang Clinic, had her own badge and she had learnt some gun twirling skills from Lightning Buck McGaw (learnt that and practiced in 2 afternoons). Mary-Lou July helped out Sassy Dancer, Shamrock Sadie, Ruby Jewel and Hey You with the announcements of the Top 8 Mens and Ladies Wild Bunch and Top 16 Cowboy's and Cowgirl's for the shootout.

 

The band played, Mary-Lou danced and danced. People had a great time, Jack was busy trying to sell land plots as his Thomas Durant persona and having a few drinks at every stop I'm guessing. Haa Haa Haa! Got him home, just before midnight and I think he had the best nights sleep he'd had in a long time!

 

Shootout took place Sunday morning. R C Shot from QLD, Australia made it in the Wild Bunch and I made it into the Cowgirl's. We used a magnetic board this year, with Sadie and Sassy having done most of the work on this one, it was fantastic, everyone had been randomly drawn and paired up the night before when announced. Then as each one dropped out we could re pair them for the next round and everyone could see who was shooting against who.

The winners of the Wild Bunch Shootout were Captain Sam Evans and Texas Tiger. For the Cowboy Shootout it was Matt Black and Texas Tiger (she is the First Lady to have won both shootout's at the one match)

 

Down to the nitty gritty and it's a huge congratulations to all who placed in their respective categories!

This is where we cross over into the Oklahoman's – The Territorial Marshal's faired well and we will include Deadeye Dillard as well 😉

Thanks must surely go to Lassiter and Deuce Stevens for a great match, to SASS, the Wild Bunch, Misty, the girls and just everyone who helps 'git er done!' Sensational work as always.

End Of Trail Opening Ceremonies

Tonight, Wednesday, was the opening ceremonies for the 2017 World Champion Cowboy Action Match. What a sensational night it was.

Yesterday we shot some warm up matches to get rid of the Wild Bunch stuff and had a pretty good day. Today I spent the first half of the day instructing with the Doily Gang Clinic – Shamrock Sadie, Hey You, Sassy Dancer and Dixie Bell, giving some guidance and coaching to ladies both new and very good shooters. Spent the time talking transitions, shotgun differences, stance etc. hopefully all got a little piece of something out of it and we sure hope to see you again.

 

Jack spent the morning wandering the vendors, buying pants, braces pieces and viewing the Clint Eastwood guns from the movies that this year's End Of Trail is based on. I will have to go visit this one myself!!

Pearl Starr and I then went to Deuce Stevens shotgun clinic…..you are never that good that you can't learn something new!…..now if I could only go shadow little miss SASSKicker and learn from that girl some more!?! (Thank you to both Deuce Stevens and Cowboy Carty)

We did a super quick run through of the stages this afternoon and then headed for the main tent waiting for beer o'clock and the opening ceremonies.

RC Shot was this year's flag bearer for Australia and along with the other country representation led the colour guard into the main tent, topped off with cannon fire and Miss Amber Scott singing the national anthem. Sensational as always.

 

The Waddies, medical assistants and the Wild Bunch/board of directors were all recognised.

 

The 2017 class of Regulators were announced of which this year I was nominated to be one as well. Wow! Just wow! Truly honoured to be included, let me tell you.

 

The beer was flowing at the bar, Jason's Deli had provided the food for the evening along with Amanda Reckonwith's divine vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cupcakes!!

Tomorrow is start of main match! Bring your A game peeps! Have fun, shoot straight, play your own game and above all be safe, think about the process and be awesome!

Wild Bunch World Championship

What an exceptional weekend of weather and shooting for the 2017 Wild Bunch World Championships.

Plenty of action and plenty of rounds down range. It certainly was a challenging match but the stages were fun.

This match definitely called for precision and by the time I got to day 3 I had worked out a better grip, better arm control and keeping my head aligned. What more could a cowgirl want! Just happened at the wrong end of the match! Haaa Haa Haa

Neither Jack or I had particularly stunning matches in the good sense but we weren't the only ones.

 

We had a great Posse with Jim Milker, Texas Tiger, Back Forty, Shell Stuffer, Lawless Lil, Molly Magoo, Rum Walker, Capitan Regulator, Trigger Happy Ted, Beaver John, Billy The Avenger, Wild Horse John, Squibber, Macon A Longshot, Grizzly Peak Jake, Duke City Deadeye, Calhoun Kid, Blaze Kinkaid, Jackaroo and myself.

We also had the 285 Scout troop picking up brass and painting targets for us.

This year we didn't do any side events but from what I heard there was a lot of fun and some great wins!

Costume contest was carried out with EZ GZ taking 1st Place, Dixie Bell 2nd Place and Kathouse Kelli 3rd. Men's was Captain George Baylor in 1st Place and Wild Horse John 2nd.

 

The Wild Bunch awards were held separate this year to the cowboy match. Santa Fe Brewing Company supplied the kegs to the bar, Pizza Barn provided pizza for the dinner (awesome pizza by the way and frequented often by many a cowboy shooter!) and so began the handing out of awards.

Oklahoma State Wild Bunch

I guess I should start with a recap from last weekend before I get into the new stuff!

This past weekend the Territorial Marshal's hosted the SASS Oklahoma State – Red Dirt Wild Bunch.

 

We had 36 shooters from far afield as Canada, Florida, Texas and a couple Aussie Okies for good measure.

 

As usual the Territorial Marshal's – Hondo Tweed and friends put on a great Wild Bunch match, dinners, side matches etc. Stages were well written, degree of difficulty was standard but everything was well executed.

AAAannndd despite a few hiccups along the way (ahem for me, including not loading ALL mags required) everyone seemed to have a great time despite the heat.

Five stages Saturday, the other 5 on Sunday.

Jack and I both placed in our categories and Jack had a great finish overall in 12th place. With both of us taking our categories as State Champions. Oh yes, and Jack won a gun.

 

Thank you to all of Hondo and his crew for putting everything together, for John Elder and his outstanding meals and service.

 

We had our Texas friends Goatneck Clem and Captain Sam Evans stay with us which was a great catch up.

Congratulations also to Captain Sam Evans and Missouri Mae for taking top honours men's and ladie's overall!
