What About Wednesday?

Yesterday started out with practice day, Wednesday 'work shirkers' found 13 Cowboys head out to the range to partake in 6 stages.

We did one of single target engagement, a Nevada sweep next and then a 5 round alternate with a 5 round dump. Repeat each stage twice, giving you a chance to perfect on the previous run or change things up. It's good for checking yourself, your equipment and well, really…..just an extra day to have fun shooting!

After burgers and beer, Jack and I headed for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, my all time favourite, to see the headdress exhibition before it finishes this next month.

As we headed down the main passage way the current short exhibition is 'The Artistry of the Western Paperback'. Featuring artists who illustrated covers etc for dime novels and more. Of course we had to get pics of our heads in the photo opportunity novels!

Then we made our way into the exhibition hall where the 'Power and Prestige: Headdresses of the American Plains' is housed. There is no photography in this exhibit but I did take notes!

Around the walls are some beautiful photos of tribal chiefs and warriors. There are also some drawings that were done by captured Indians being held in forts. Many depicted warriors and horses.

The headdress, like other forms of clothing or jewellery in other cultures, is a symbol of prestige, power, wealth and position in a tribe.

Some of the headdresses were made with the traditional eagle feathers with porcupine quills, horsehair, leather, silk and/or beads. There were smaller ones made with deer tail and one split horn piece covered in weasel fur. This one (photo courtesy of National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum website) made using ring-neck pheasant feathers.

There are also 5 distinct styles of headdress; flared, swept back, stand out, straight up and trailer. The trailer headdress are exquisite but I would think there would be a fair bit of weight in these also as they are the ones that usually reach the ground. There is an exceptional exhibit of one in another section of the museum that we have seen before.

As we made our way to the next exhibition I spied a familiar bronze statue. It was indeed a Frederic Remington! (Remember the Winter Range trophies from previous blog?!!) here is a collection of Frederic Remington works including, bronze, drawings, art and facts and tales of the artist himself. A chance meeting I do declare! 🙂

On into the 'Hollywood and The West' exhibit. What a stunning collection of photography by John R Hamilton. (Also no photography in the exhibit.)

His many views through the lens of some very scenic sunsets, snow, monument valley backdrops, are beautiful but it is his candid shots of the many western actors that he captured both during filming and off set that makes for an excellent (photo courtesy of National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum website)

For movies from the silver screen era such as Hombré, Silverado, El Dorado, Stagecoach, The Searchers, Sergeants 3, Revenge and more. Featuring none other than John Wayne, Paul Newman, Kevin Costner, Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas, the 'rat pack', and of course the lovely ladies Shelley Winters, Anne Margaret, Bridget Bardot and a very young Natalie Wood.

From here we could see another interesting exhibit with that all familiar cowboy accoutrement – the bandanna. Aptly named 'A Yard of Turkey Red: The Western Bandanna' just had to be viewed while we were here. (Photo courtesy of National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum website)

The neckwear that became the most recognised cowboy attire, was usually used to keep dust and dirt out of the cowboys face whilst herding cattle. They kept their best bandannas for outings and like other species, some were more colourful in hopes of attracting the ladies.

Turkey red was a colour produced for dyeing cotton with the root of the rubia plant. An arduous process apparently in the 18th and 19th century, it was imported to England from the Middle East in the 1700's. Later even cochineal was used to dye and produce magnificent reds also. Indigo also featured in later years.

Around the walls the photos and cabinet cards feature Cowboys sporting their bandannas and although black and white you can clearly see the distinctive patterns on them.

The display cases house a number of different bandannas, some dating back to pre civil war (paisley pattern)1865. The thing that caught my eye however was a bolt of fabric still with its stickers on it. A gorgeous red with cream and what appeared to be navy, continuous floral design motif. Made by SH Greene Warwick of Rhode Island, it was gorgeous and I found myself looki at the end of the bolt to see if I could work out how many yards were left on it!

It was interesting to note that many of the later bandannas had dot or geometric designs on them. The paisley design came in around 1808, so named after the town it was produced in – Paisley, Scotland. However paisley is an English word for buta or boteh, the teardrop shaped design is actually of Persian origins. As we know it is probably the most significant or recognisable detail on the bandanna.

Later productions of bandannas had pictures and were often used for souvenirs or advertising. There was a bandanna with a castle featured but I didn't get the details of this one. I did however find on the Internet that a bandanna with Washingtons picture on it was produced in 1776.

All in all a great way to round out the day!

Cold, Shoot, Wet, Shoot, More Cold

Why…..on a shot weekend…..does it need to be 30-48F/sub zero to around 6C.

Holy moly! Yesterday started off cool but pleasant, hmm not too bad we think, take jackets, hand warmers etc, all good.

A short time later, a slight breeze picks up – create wind chill.

The northern cold front moves in – temperature plummets again.

Add a little of that moisture stuff – yay drizzle as well.

Anyway, still had fun, 36 shooters, 6 stages shot, just meant a bit more cleaning of guns after and despite the fumbles had a respectable finish. Happy days! Thanks again Territorial Marshal's for a fabulous club match.

This morning we get up earlier – need to travel 2 hours to get to Sand Springs.

Again, cool but pleasant with hopes of it clearing. Scarf included in the mix of items today. Legs were warm yesterday so it's pants and chinks again – hmm toasty.

Have high hopes of cloud clearing and sun breaking through on the way. Just after Macca's picking up breaky, the sun is rising and I'm excited.

We get onto Zinc Ranch and we see 5 deer, (pic of 2 from the pack) and it's a great day to be here.

We end up with 30 shooters, 6 stages, a better day than yesterday shooting wise, really happy days. Great posse, weather consistently cool, everyone's rugged up and making sure all shooters are soon deposited back into their warm coats and gloves. Thanks to Indian Territory SASS for a great day.

Worn out, warmed up, nice and cosy. Hoping for some warmer days for Land Run! Less than two weeks to get your entries in, then another two weeks on til we have approx 300 shooters take part in this awesome event.

See you down the trail soon

Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma

Friday we left behind our Aussie friends, such wonderful hospitality and thank you ever so much for showing us just a few of the sights of Utah. Can't wait to visit again to see more. ❤ 🙂

Heading up through Arizona to Jacob Lake, we made a quick stop at La Fevre overlook – 6700ft. The snow is now rock solid ice but the scenery is sensational.

We saw a coyote through the next beautiful sections but given I was typing, missed the opportunity for photo. He was beautiful as he stood out against the snowy backdrop, looking back over his shoulder towards the other side of the road. I wondered if he had a mate close by or whether something had chased him.

Through Jacob Lake and now heading to Marble Canyon, we wound our way through the Kaibab National Park only to pop out the other side to red rock cliffs, desolate ground and straight roads again.

From Grants, I drove the rest of the day to Moriarty where we parked for the night at the usual stop – Sunset Motel. New Mexico turned on a spectacular sunset behind us as we drove through Albuquerque.

Out early this morning we stopped at Tucumcari for breakfast and hit the road again. It's 62F, sunshine, country music and highways.

Made it! We are back in Oklahoma, after another fabulous trip!

Red Dirt Rampage 2016

Red Dirt Rampage, SASS SW Regionals 2016, was held this past weekend with the most sensational weather we could have hoped for at this time of year.

Congratulations to the Match Directors, Flat Top Okie and Missouri Mae, and all of the Territorial Marshal's for their help, in putting on another exceptional match.

Thursday started out as foggy but cleared to gorgeous blue skies. I sent Mary Lou July out to do warm up and get the cowgirls and cowboy's revved up for the weekend.

I think all she did was confuse and scare a lot of them! Haa Haa Haa! All in all, a ton of good fun.

Main match days Friday and Saturday, it had its ups and downs for me but Jack had a great weekend, cleaned the match and some great times! Was nice for him to have a win for a change!

Virgil and Allie shot with us on our Posse. Pretty sure they had a great time on and off the range.

Posse 19 consisted of myself as Posse Marshal, Jackaroo, Wild Horse John as Deputy Posse Marshal, Virgil Earp, Alvira Sullivan Earp, Calico Calie, Denton Dancer, Wildcat Cliff, Capt. Lee, Trent, Cowtown Scout, Buffdriver, Nana Quilter, Witchita Southpaw, West Okie Wayne, and Silver Sam. We had visits by Wild Horse Johns wife, Saginaw Sue who is great at keeping us checked at the unloading table, and Erica, Wildcat Cliff's daughter. Hopefully we've convinced her to take up cowboy shooting!

It was great to visit with so many good folks again as usual, we didn't stay for the shootout and brisket dinner on the Friday evening but heard everyone enjoyed it.

As usual the Saturday evening banquet was held at the National Cowboy & Hall of Fame Museum. The gathering presented a number of opportunities for some great costuming and many went home with some trophy photos from that.

NOTE: costuming is a huge part of our sport.

There are so many real life cowboys, cowgirls, western genre movie stars of the past and more recent western tv shows to base costumes on. Be creative, have a great story, it truly is a pleasure to see and hear people's interpretation, inspiration and love for what they do.

It is always hard to round people up to enter the competitions and I hope more people participate in future. I hope you have been inspired by some of those who entered this year. Myself, Cowtown Scout and Wild Horse John were impressed. I must thank them for assisting me this year as I still learnt more from them in what to ask the contestants, thank you.

Guns were given away, other prize draws occurred and it was down to the awards part of the evening. There were 52 clean match awards handed out and Jackaroo was one of them this time!!

Allie won Lady Silver Senior!

Jackaroo as I mentioned, had a clean match and won Silver Senior category and finished 15th overall, an extremely good finish! Yay man.

I won ladies fastest rifle, fastest pistol and won Lady Wrangler category, overall finish doesn't rate a mention (let's just say I'm a little disappointed in my performance). A huge congratulations to all the other Lady Wrangler shooters!

Overall winners and this years South West Regional Champions must be congratulated!! C.S.Brady and Missouri Mae!

Congrats to all who won, placed, and just came to have fun and catch up.

Do You Remember?

Today is 9-11, September 11, when 15 years ago the world changed.

Many lives were lost and thoughts of loved ones around the world wondered where there relatives were, if they were safe. When you couldn't wait to get back to your kids, to hug and hold them tight. To be thankful.

Not only the personnel working in the Twin Towers that day – bystanders, flight crew, passengers and many first responders did what they could and never came home. For those, we remember.

Our club match today started with the pledge of allegiance and a moments silence with 3 rings on the bell by Roy's Creek Dan (ex-firefighter) to honour the fallen and his many fire fighting comrades.

Jack and I wore one of our patriotic outfits in honour of this day also.

A smaller shoot list compared to yesterday but we still had a great turn out of 35 willing participants.

We hope your day was filled with memories and fun shared with great friends and/or loved ones.

Make each day count.

Hair Tearing! Swearing!

I had it all planned out this afternoon, to start on four projects that require embroidery work and type an article for the Chronicle that I had promised.

Fair enough, easy she says, everything is done and ready to roll.

WRONG!!!! (And I don't even know how to do emojis the old fashioned way to express my horror so you will just have to visualise!)

So my heart skipped a beat as I plugged in the USB to my embroidery machine with the (many hours work in the car, last trip) embroidery design to be stitched out. Hell no!! No design showing up on the machine.

You have to be kidding me!!! The ones previously are showing up but none of thE NEW SIX DESIGNs are showing up!

Okay, think Jo (yep my real name), what am I going to do now…………okay, delete files and reload onto USB stick. Plug in, turn on machine …….nothing!

Whaaaattt!!!

Okay, by now the cursing has well and truly started. Probably in between thoughts of throwing myself on the ground and chucking a hissy fit!

Next, use your brain, what's it gonna be? Okay so tried different USB, nup same thing – oh and I might add at this point the stupid file is showing on the USB/s on the computer! – so resort to deleting and formatting said USB stick! Save file, put in machine, turn machine on, still no file. Aaaaaahhhhhhh!

Ring Mum, quick! It's 7.30am in Australia, ring Mum, she'll know what to do.

After discussion we decide two of us can't figure out, agree to send files by email and wait for Mum to get back to me! 😦 😦

I have now wasted 3 hours of work time, it sounds more like a room of sailors with the swearing and thank god it's drinks time.

So not content to sit back and enjoy my Shiner Bok, I started googling more info ('cause I'm really peeved and freaking out because I can't afford not to have it working!) and what to my wandering eyes should appear? Not 8 tiny reindeer but a thread on an appliqué site and the lady said how the stitching area was smaller than the hoop!?!?

Off I go back to the computer – duplicate, new frame, paste, make slightly smaller, save, save on USB, put in machine, turn on……….

Ta da!!!!

It freaking worked! Now it's showing up on the screen and ready to stitch! Holy moly, I was having pink kittens (as Gram's used to say) rang Mum back (and I might add she was on her computer getting ready to check it out even though she did say she wouldn't be checking til their night time! Thanks Mum) SORTED! Happy Girl.

Now I can get back to what I should have been damn well doing in the first place!

Well maybe I'll just rest and have a drink first.

Cheers big ears!

Texas-Oklahoma

Playing catch up!

Last weekend was fabulous, spending time with Texas ladies, shopping for fabric in Houston.

After being sworn in to the 'Royal Order of the Safety Pin' we headed out to the first stop – High Fashion Fabrics.

We lunched at Saint Dane's Bar and Grill after, then headed on to some more stores!

Got most of what was on the list! Win!

We spent two great days shooting with the Thunder River Renegades with some Mexican food and drinks thrown in for good measure.

Don't you just love TJD's new pinup shirt?!

Sunday afternoon it was back on the road to Oklahoma.

It's been head down, bum up this week and today we had the Territorial Marshals club match. Yippee! shot good today and so did Jack, we finished 5th and 7th respectively out of 55 shooters.

It's on again tomorrow instead of Wild Bunch, as we head for Sand Springs next week and the Oklahoma State Championships.

Cheers

Indian Territory SASS

Headed out at sparrows today and took the almost 2hr drive up through Sapulpa and Sand Springs to Zink Ranch. Home of Red Castle Gun Club and the ITSASS club.

The Oklahoma State Championships will be held here in early September so it was a good chance to get up and shoot there again.

It was warm and muggy when we opened the doors to get out of the car at 8.30 in the morning. We ended up with a slight breeze, making it a little more comfortable AND nice cool watermelon helped – thanks Catoosa Red!!

Forty four shooters in total turned out for the day. With the match scored on total time it was a huge congratulations to Creek County Kid taking out overall, good friend Missouri Mae 2nd, Jack finished 3rd and I was 4th with the rest scattered throughout the pack.

Hope you had a great weekend.

Couple of Weeks

Haa Haa, I should say fortnight just to throw some off!

Actually it's probably been slightly longer than that…..wow time flies.

Back into it, machine got serviced ready for action, back to the gym *ahem, coughs* after being at End of Trail was definitely needed!

We have had a couple of practice days and a club match thrown in for good measure with some pleasing results coming out of that but there is always more to learn and more to be done.

Now that the machine is back in action it has been knocking out some repairs and alterations, a few tops, another bright B-Western shirt and now back to corsets, bags, garters, bandanas, tops, skirts and more!

Yes! Back in my element again and loving the eclectic mix of colours and patterns again.

Have a couple of new bigger projects coming up too including an 1890's gown, sack suit/s and a Tom Mix tribute.

We also threw in a quick trip to the National Cowboy Museum to check out the Hell On Wheels costume exhibit. Real it was just so I could get pictures and drool over Eva's costume from Season 5 but we did see Cullen Bohannon and Thomas Durant's costumes as well. Looks like I have another project for Jack. 😉

Yee Haa! Have a sensational day people.

Good End To A Great Day

This morning we set out to the Territorial Marshal's club match, 3 posses, 45 cowboy's and cowgirls in total with a few onlookers/newbies including an Aussie and her husband would you believe!?!

We had a ball, 6 stages, trying out a new shotgun and using Jacks pistols all went well. Finished 3rd overall, Jack 5th.

My pistols have been handed over to Roy's Creek Dan for a total rebuild. They were second hand to start with, had an absolute flogging over the past 10 years (in particular the last 3-5years), looking forward to the next 10 with them!

This afternoon it was rest time, do a bit of computer work, cool down and then this evening we headed down to Bricktown, OK City and went to Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill. A celebration in between both our birthdays as we often do. (Me on the 4th and Jack on the 18th)

We sat at the bar area, had big mugs of beer, chips and salsa and then an excellent ribs and chicken with coleslaw and fried okra – yes, we decided we would share – a damn good decision as they are big meals, all the while watching NASCAR in Kentucky. Yee haa!

Good day, great night, now for a cuppa and Cinge Tequila!

Night peeps!
