Ahhh, Range Work Day

Land Run is coming up peeps! So the Territorial Marshal's were out in full force today, tidying, planning, fixing and moving anything from targets to buildings.

We had a great turn out and such divine weather to get the work done today.

Took out the latest prop for install – the dynamite box.

A half time break of hamburgers for lunch and then it was back into the final tasks.

Time to give up by 5pm and head home for drinks and, dare I say, pizza because I can't be stuffed cooking tonight.

Looking forward to shooting tomorrow!

Yee haa!

Trivia: things I learnt today

* there is a difference between a buck and a does hoof prints. More pressure in the print on the front of the hoof from the buck as apposed to pressure in the back of the hoof print of a doe. Therefore we had bucks running amuck on the range!

* a fish called a paddle bill is massive and has a flat long bill thing but more interesting has 2 sets of gills like a filtration system for the plankton and their eggs are regarded as high quality like black caviar.

* a shifting spanner to us Aussies is apparently a crescent wrench here.

🙂 So there ya go!

No Rest For The Wicked

It's Monday and we are home after spending a great weekend in Arkansas.

Went to the gym and came home with the idea that we really need to get into another prop and signage work for the Territorial Marshal's.

So convincing the boss excitedly to 'lets go buy timber!' A few discussions and quick drawings and we headed off to Home Depot.

After lunch Jack knocked up the box, finished the top – perfect! I've already got it base coated and the pictures sought for the next artistic piece.

Phew! Before we knew it, it's knock off time but not before Jack got the car washed and we installed our new – never lose your car in a NASCAR parking lot again – branding on the Dodge.

We should have done this ages ago, just 'cause it looks so good! AND we got stickers with USA flag and OK state flag and managed to get an AUS flag and QLD flag together, who'd have thought!?

The blue writing matches the pin striping Jack put on it a couple of months ago.

Anyway best go feed him now for his efforts!

Have a good one!

Hell On The Border

Under a watery sunlit, sometimes see a slight shadow, semi coolish sorta day (how's that for a description? :)), 150 shooters set for 7 stages of cowboy shooting in Arkansas at Old Fort Gun Club.

Now it wasn't without its hiccups for many and we were certainly part of that with hangups with ammo but really nothing major.

We had a great posse. Woo! Go Posse 6 – Back 40, Belle Vaquera, Billy Broncstomper, Blackwater Bruce, Browncoat Annie, Cajun, Cap'n Highpockets, Dusty Darryl, Greasy Creek Slim, Hairless, Irish Tom, Jackaroo, Kathouse Kelli, Mean Mary, Miss Shirl, Mud Puppy, Revelator, Shell Stuffer, Silent Thunder, Tightwad Swede and Willie Mescal.

The proceedings started with prayer and pledge of allegiance, then a swift presentation of the National Buckaroo champ's trophy – we didn't catch them at OKC last weekend and he'd skipped out early at Winter Range – done by Gunny Buckshot. Good one CR Hicock and we hope you do well at EOT is year before you move up to Junior Boy category!

Sooooooo as I mentioned, there were a few undesirable stages for many but all in all, everyone had a great day and faired well. Especially for Oklahoman's (and faux Oklahoman's) – just sayin'!

Although outnumbered the Oklahoman's did well with placing – Long Branch Kitty, Bea G, Lonesome Buck, Kiamichi Queen, The Brisco Kid, Broncho Red, Choctaw Jim, Tacky Jackie, Bois D'Arc, C R Hicock, Montana Dan, Matt Valentine, Red Knee, Scott Wayne, Highland Scottie, Roy's Creek Dan, Jackaroo and Kathouse Kelli. Excuse me if I've forgotten anyone!

Overall Ladies was myself, Kathouse Kelli – Australian by way of Oklahoma and Overall Men's, Roy's Creek Dan – Oklahoma. Yee haa!

Jack took 2nd place in Senior with 3rd place going to Back 40 and 1st place going to Greasy Creek Slim. Congratulations!

A big congratulations to my fellow Lady Wranglers, 2nd Place to Cheek A Bow Wow and 3rd Place – Belle Vaquera.

Jackaroo and I managed to pull off a double win on Derringer for Men's and Ladies and I also won Best Dressed Ladies Shooter for the day.

A great shoot, plenty of good people to be reacquainted with and meet new ones. Tomorrow we will finish the last 5 stages of the Arkansas State Wild Bunch match.

Cheers

Lights Out Soon

Hit the gym early this morning and then home for breaky, woke the other half, packed the car and we hit the road earlier than intended.

It was a dull looking day and continued to read Hearts of the West by Chris Enss, well that is until I could doze off and put myself in and out of consciousness between Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson and reading.

A quick stop for lunch and we were back on the road for Fort Smith. Arrived around 3.30pm, picked up packs at the range and said g'day to a few before coming back to hotel.

A few drinks and snacks and we went to Red Lobster for dinner. Yes! Thank you! Stuffed as, afterwards and I didn't even eat the mashed potatoes but the lobster tails were sensational.

Anyway, enough degustation talk it's time for sleep and get ready for Wild Bunch tomorrow.

Have a good one!

Arkansas Here We Come

Tomorrow we will head to Arkansas, Old Fort Gun Club for AR State Championship for Wild Bunch and Hell On The Border match.

Looking forward to it and hope to see lots of cowboys and cowgirls there!

The weather is looking fine with maybe a shower on Friday but nothing we can't handle, right?!

Hope to see you there!

NASCAR Day

Saturday post also late but here you go! ……..

Well we made it out to the track at 9.30am and spent the time checking out cars, souvenir brief checkout – cap by default as I left mine in the car. 🙂

So much happening, cars to look at, okay normally a Ford Fan but Chevrolet could be my new brand and I do like the new sports look especially in 'Blue Velvet' paint finish – yes please!

Jack found a new toolbox. Well the mother of all tool drawers, has a lift up tv screen, speakers and can hook it up to a fridge as well. What more could a bloke want.?!

Boydgaming 300 – 200 laps, 300 miles. Tomorrow's race the Kobalt 400

You can even rent race car headphones with a scanner to 14 cars, in car cameras and sound via fan vision! Amazing!

Thank goodness there is a slight breeze! It is warm and can get a bit more of a farmers tan!

We watched qualifying for the race and and practice for the guys for the Sunday race. Very cool and very loud, succumbed to ear plugs.

30sec a lap, on low qualifying that's 10sec a km

I learned that Chase Elliot in the No.9 car and Dale Earnhart Jr. In the No. 88 car both race for Chevy. Yep, happy with that. 🙂

In a Shelby Ford car No.4 is Ryan Blaney, so have to go for him just because it's Ford AND because 4 is my favourite number.

Lap 168 5th start of the day. Car 33 up and down but gets back to the top. So far he is back to no1 again.

After a late 6th start with barely a few laps to go it is a very close battle between 1st and 2nd place, car 22 almost gets past car 33 but goes sideways and puts it into the wall a great race between those 2 drivers all day.

Almost overtaken on the final bend, Dillon is fast on the straights and floors it again staying ahead of the pack to win the race!

Now that's what I call a finish! Everyone was on their feet at each start and were definitely on their feet for the finish!

Austin Dillon, Chevrolet, 1st, Ryan Blaney, Ford, 2nd, Regan Smith, Chevrolet, 3rd, Denny Hamlin, Toyota, 4th and in 5th, Chevrolet, Chase Elliot

Yee haa, finally been to a NASCAR race, bucket list, check!

Now getting out of the car park was the next interesting side event and no wonder people have tailgate parties while waiting for the crowds to die down. The Interstate was slow (could see it hardly moving from the car park) the car park was at a standstill until we got moved to a different exit.

We are thinking woo hoo, we are out in an hour!

It took another hour and a half to get clear down Las Vegas Boulevard back to the hotel.

In total? Same amount of time to return to hotel as it was for the race 😦

Still, a lot of fun though!

Cheers race fans!

Kat xo

P.S. Sorta glad we didn't stay for the Sunday race! Could have been worse getting out of car park and would have been worse checking out Monday morning.

Shelby America Visit

(I’m late getting this out) Last Friday we headed out to Shelby American Museum and Factory for a tour of all things Shelby/GT/Cobra!!

Our tour guide for the morning was Jim King – who had a wealth of knowledge. When he bought his first Shelby engine it cost $3689 – the engines we saw earlier were from around $26,899.

Carroll Shelby, the man behind the brand was born and raised in Texas. He later joined the Forces as a Pilot and after service was a flight instructor training bombers and bombardiers. He also tried his hand at chicken farming and while successful to start with he still wanted to try his hand at motor racing.

In the decade of the 50’s, Carroll Shelby raced 168 times, all the races he entered he had a podium finish in both USA and Europe.

He was noticed and was asked to race for Ferrari. He asked how much money and when told it wasn’t about the money he got up and walked out! So started the long term love/hate relationship between Carrol Shelby and Rnzo Ferrari. (By the way Shelby had said before walking out, I have a wife and two kids to take care of)

In 1959/60 Shelby raced whilst having massive chest pains – men! Stubborn as ……And I’m sure when Jack was racing had this occurred, he would have finished the race too!

Shelby wanted small performance cars. He started with ACA’s in England, Chevy’s and Schiaperellis in USA but still wasn’t there.

He visited with Ford in the 60’s and his timing was just right. Ford had looked at releasing performance cars for all types of racing. Lee Iacocca was General Manager and Vice President of Ford at the time and was looking for something new. Shelby was there at the right time wanting a couple of engines and $25k. Lee gave him the opportunity.

In 1961 they had experimental engines of 260hp V8, got the chassis’ from ACA flown over and in 1962 they had the first car. This is it in the photo below, the plain blue one, black and white pic.

Once done it was sent out for testing with various motoring magazines. when it was finished with by one it was shipped back to Shelby, repainted and sent out to another magazine. The current blue colour was painted for the 50th anniversary, on a chip on one fender they count 6 different colours underneath.

CSX2000 Cobra No1 is currently worth $26M. Amazing and a true piece of history.

From 62-63 they built some and sold some – these now had the 289hp engines. In Jim’s words, Shelby won a tremendous amount of races.

One of their first employees in 1963 was a guy by the name of Pete Brock (and no for all the Aussies, not OUR Peter Brock – and everyone says you have a double in the world!) THIS Brock was given the task to design the aerodynamics for the Shelby Racing cars.

Designers were sought from the school he was attending and at the time he submitted the 1963 Corvette Stingray design which he was chosen for out of all the others attending at the same time.

Carroll hired Brock in 1961 as a driver and at that point he didn’t know about his designing, Speed comes from horsepower and aerodynamics, the latter being the cheapest.

Shelby tasked Brock to come up with something. He went out and bought a roll of brown paper, taped it to the floor of Shelby’s office and came up with the streamline cobra back. From there Shelby approved the design and they built the aluminium body. When he took it for a test drive it was uncontrollable – they took a piece of aluminium cut it with tin snips and put a bracket on it, took it back to the car drilled some holes and fitted the foil. The spoiler helped manage the downforce and on the third lap he broke the speed record.

Brock’s design allowed air to come in and cool then flow up and out of the hood over the car. Previous designs allowed for air to exit underneath the car but the hot air caused the car to be unstable.

1964 daytonas were entered in Monza, Italy and he and Ferrari were neck and neck on points. Ferrari knew that their cars weren’t as fast as the Shelby’s. Ferrari had won 7 of the 9 consecutive years they had entered the construction car race.

Daytona coupe no1 resides in a museum in Philadelphia the rest are in private collectors hands.

If 100 cars are built and sold in a year the cars can then be raced as a production car, if less than 100 sold they can only be raced as a prototype car.

The 427 in 1965 he only got 57 built of the 100 and it wasn’t until 90s (?) the final 43 were built, these are called a continuation Cobra.

The 50th Anniversary they produced 50 Cobra 427’s. Number 1 and 50 live on the showroom floor. After its first showing, within 48hrs the other 48 were sold and of those 40 were finished in the polished aluminium per customer order. Qtr million each!

They are still all hand made today as they were when they started. Now instead of cast iron engines the aluminium ones are made at 150pds lighter.

The GT350 got its name after much discussion about what to call it. Shelby asked one of his guys to go measure the length of the shop, when he came back he said it’s about 350ft and therefore it became the GT350. Nothing to do with hp at all.

At one point Ford tried to buy out Ferrari. It didn’t work and so became the building of the GT40 so named as it was only 40″ high and was taken to Le Mans to race. In 1967 they got 1st, 2nd and 3rd!! 1968 1st, and 1969 1st.

The blue and black ones were shelbyised for Chrysler. In the 70’s. When asked how the black pocket rocket goes he said goes like hell so in the name of it GLH. In a race against a GT350 the little black one beat the GT 14.6 sec to 15.3sec. For 4cyl performance with front wheel drive no less!

Shelby employ 110 staff, working in a 350sqft floor space. The Shelby 1000 is dyno’d here, when they make it is a complete rebuild of the car. They’ve built 30 or so. Just over rear wheel HP1060, torque 850 – they are a very special order.

There are over 8000 visitor signatures on the shop wall factory side. All this in almost a year, of course we added ours to it!

The Heritage Centre is in the midst of changing and will eventually have all models displayed in the correct time line.

This was sooooo good and I know Dad would have loved it. He always wanted a Cobra GT.

All the above was as fast as I could take down during the tour so I hope I’ve done it justice. Thank you Shelby America for the time trip!

Viva Las Vegas!

Booked in for a tour – Gold and Silver Pawn Show VIP Tour. Takes in the History Channel shows of Ricks Restorations, Pawn Stars, Counts Kustoms, Toy Shack and ATM (Acrylic Tank Manufacturing).

Christian is our tour guide for the afternoon. Did you know Las Vegas, means The Meadows? Shouted out by a Spanish conquistador when he discovered the area in 1829.

The 4.5 miles long Vegas strip is not actually in Las Vegas but actually in Winchester or Paradise.

Las Vegas is actually out past the strip, we went through there this morning on our way to finding the racetrack. It was an eye opener, past Fremont Street mall, there are homeless people living on the edges of the street. Such a stark contrast to the strip that's for sure.

Pick up was at the Tropicana and the red car!

First stop at Ricks Restoration in the arts district, lots of car shops, detailing upholstery etc. this is cool! Couldn't take photos in the back shop tour area. There were all sorts of amazing restored pieces, one ready to go to Aus! They really do amazing work.

We got to meet Ron, Ricks brother. We've seen him sent out on parts missions on the show before! Got an autograph and a photo with him.

Next it's on to Counts Kustoms to check out the beautiful restored cars that Danny and the boys do.

Horny Mikes bus! Way cool. Because he likes horns, this has two train horns installed in it. Awesome paint job and the 3D skulls popping out of the back are unique.

The cars in the show room are only a third of Danny's collection. Got an autograph from Roli while here before we left.

Next on to Pawn Stars – Gold and Silver Pawn Shop. We just missed seeing Chumlee by 5 minutes! Didn't buy anything, checked out a watch but nothing jumping out at me. He made another appearance so some of the bus got to see him.

Johnny from Toy Shack, Jeremy from Sports Card Memorabilia both appraise items that come into the Pawn Shop.

See the Atomic Energy Lab toy? That actually had uranium and plutonium In the box, 1959 toy!

Acrylic Tank Manufacturing the final stop of the tour. Animal Planets number 1 show called Tanked. They build specialised fish tanks in various shapes, light up etc. we haven't watched any of these shows. It sounds like they do very unique stuff! They've done the tank for Silverton hotel where they hold underwater mermaid shows!….. Only in Vegas.

'The General' one of the owners of ATM did a little speech for us, we took a quick look at projects underway and we were on our way back to the strip.

The NASCAR truck parade was tonight. The streets were packed with people for the 6pm parade.

Bought our tickets for Jersey Boys tomorrow night and headed back to the hotel.

Phew! What a day.

Hoover Dam, Boulder City NV

A morning spent at Hoover Dam was indeed an experience not to be missed. With Jack’s engineering and structural steel early years and my time spent soaking up the Cotter Dam experience as Safety Advisor, it truly was an engineering marvel and glad we got to see it!

It was fantastic to see the relevance to Cotter and to understand how the Hoover Dam worked. Although the ‘gallery’ in the Hoover Dam is somewhat more elaborate and had foreseen the inclusion of tourists.

It’s Art Deco influences and subway tiles adorn the tunnel and is all still original, maintained but has never been replaced. Even the doors are brass and copper and the ornate designs on the granite floor are to symbolise power and water. The terrazzo flooring in 1936 cost $59k.

The Hoover Dam (or Boulder Dam as it was once known also) design was finalised and signed off for construction in 1931.

It took 2 years for the diversion tunnels to be built – an upper coffer dam and a lower coffer dam – 2 x 50ft diversion tunnels on each side of the Colorado River steered the flow around the site so excavation could be done to get to bedrock. (Wow this brings back memories of oh so familiar works – nowhere near the scale though!)

Construction began in 1931 and the last concrete poured in 1935 – 2 years ahead of schedule!

There are 17 generators in the power plant. 1 generator alone weighs 560 tonne and produces (if I heard him correctly) 130 million mega watts of power.

The base of the dam is as thick as the power plant room – 660ft/201.2m in width and at the crest – 45ft/13.

We took a little trip to one of the air vents which looked so small from the top to being as large as fitting 4 people in the space when you are at that level. The air vent is roughly 100ft above water level and wall around 300ft thick. Air vents are/were for curing the concrete, core samples continue to be taken today to ensure it is progressing as it should be.

Survey markers and tripods used to check the curvature of the dam for flex after earthquakes or water level changes. Now measurements are taken 3-5 years. AND might I add, this was built to withstand an 8.5 magnitude earthquake.

One foot high stairs run the full height of 726ft high stairs. Has the appropriate internal run off gutter with the water being collected, filtered before being returned downstream. (Hmm now I know what the gutters were for along the stairwell in the gallery of the Cotter! All makes sense)

You can still see the markings from the timber used for the framing of all the tunnels. Once used, it was stripped and then used in Boulder City to make the workers houses. It was said that a man could start shift and by the time he finished he did not know which was his house as 5-6 more had been built in the day.

It was decided that construction of this magnitude should include someone from every state in the United States. This was achieved by men or materials used in the construction of the dam.

Last but not least, most of the large dams in the US are entities in their own right and taken care of by the Bureau of Reclamation. Therefore the Hoover Dam is owned by neither state, NV or AZ but by the nation.

If you ever get out this way, make a visit, it is an incredible sight. We did get to the Boulder Dam Hotel and it’s Museum as well!

Grand Canyon West Skywalk

This morning in Kingman we were going to do the Mohave Museum of History and Art but on entering we realised we had actually done it along with the Route 66 Powerhouse Museum in 2012.

So a couple of snaps of the murals on the outside of the building, and a Happy 100th Birthday Bonelli House – missed that one again – opens too late for us, and we are on the road heading for today's adventure.

We are close to the western rim of the Grand Canyon and seeing as we have talked about doing the skywalk in the past, there is no time like the present!

It is sunny and cool today, a little cloud but I'm betting by the time we get there we should have some sensational views!

As we pass Chloride, the backdrop of mountains is stunning and can see some dusting of snow still. I wonder if there will be snow still in the Grand Canyon? They had some the week before.

The weird looking cactus trees I mentioned were trying to flower yesterday? Joshua Trees and this is about 21 miles of a Joshua Tree forest.

Well we made it to the rim! Little bits of snow, sunshine and glorious views! First stop was Hualapai Ranch…..hmmm, I'm sorry but the cowboy buildings and facades were better at Winter Range. Lunch was good though and made use of the wagons to get a decent photo.

Onto Eagle Point and the Skywalk. WOW! Just love the scenery you find here. Standing on the very edge of the canyon it is hard to fathom the depth or get 4000ft into perspective. For me it was like standing at the top of an 82m tower crane, very cool! Jack enjoyed it because there were railings and felt comfortable at the feeling of enclosure.

You can't take photos on the skywalk and all belongings are to be locked into lockers before you go through security. Then you don the fabulous shoe covers lol, and can proceed to walk onto the glass skywalk.

Not only is the view spectacular but the great engineering feat that went into making this happen is truly outstanding. One million pounds of steel, 83 million pounds of glass – the 10ft wide platform can hold 71 million pounds, the equivalent to 71 fully loaded 747 planes!

A quick stop at Guano Point and before the next little ice storm hits it's back in the bus and head back to the main terminal.

There is a little ranch on the side of the road as you head out to the Skywalk and this sign was at the side of the road. As you head out there it says……

And as you are coming back it says…. (Bit hard to read – says long road ahead, come here instead)

Haa haa haa, anyway, on the road now to the next overnight stop in Boulder City.

Cheers

Kat xo
